Choose from four different birding tours

In addition to the beautiful beaches, islands, the historic downtown, cultural events and sites, the area around Mazatlan offers the traveller interested in nature and birdwatching an enriching experience. The area is characterized by long, white beaches, mangrove-lined brackish water estuaries (lagoons), tropical deciduous and dry thorn forest and in the higher elevations pine/oak forests. Each area is unique in the type of flora and fauna it is comprised of. For example the tropical deciduous forest possesses up to 40 % of the flora and fauna found in all of Mexico. Over 400 hundred species of birds, 35 Mexican endemics and another 17 Mexican/Central American endemics, are found in the three combined ecosystems.

The wealth of avifauna here attracted the great ornithologist, Andrew Jackson Grayson who came to Mazatlan from California during the 1850`s to illustrate the birds of the Pacific Slope of California and Mexico. He and his wife lived in
Mazatlan for 10 years until his death here in 1869. In addition to his work in California he completed 156 bird portraits and tried unsuccessfully during that time to get support from the fledgling Smithsonian Institute and the Mexican government to have his work published. Recently however public interest has brought his illustrations out of storage and people are seeing why he was so rightfully named the" Audubon of the West".

Mazatleco Tours offers day tours to cover the three habitats found around
Mazatlan: The Coastal Lagoon kayak tour; The Foothills of the Sierra Madre
Tour and the Pine & Oak Forest Tour (Home of the Tufted Jay). Please click on the tour you are interested in to view tour specifics.

We also offer overnight trips to the pine/oak forests of the Barranca
Rancho Liebre (home of the Tufted Jay), near the town of El Palmito, (where
we are working on a conservation project with the local comunity and several
NGO's) to allow more time for birding up in the
canyon and a 2 night stay in San Blas, Nayarit.

  • We can arrange ground transportation, accommodations and local bilingual
guides for out of town birding clubs and tours.
  • We will also help you out if all you want is to get pointed in the right
direction with a local bird list in hand.

Please contact us for more information regarding the overnight tours.
