Christmas Bird Count in Mazatlan
What is a Christmas Bird Count ?
The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is a census of birds in the Western Hemisphere, performed annually in the early
Northern-hemisphere winter by volunteer birders. The purpose is to provide population data for use in science,
especially conservation biology, though many people participate for recreation.
Started in 1900, the CBC is conducted in over 2000 localities across Canada, the United States, Latin America, and the
Caribbean. The third Mazatlan Christmas bird count was carried out on January 2nd and 3rd, 2010. The results will be published here in March.
Our Christmas Bird Count circles were:
JAN 2nd, 2010:
Estero “El Yugo” (close to Cerritos beach). The habitat here is dry-forest, mangroves, fresh water, and estuary, with birds such as the Black-throated Magpie-Jay, Purplish Jay, Citreoline Trogon, migratory ducks, egrets, ibis, spoonbills, etc.
JAN 3rd, 2010:
Tufted Jay Preserve, in the Barranca Rancho Liebre on the Mazatlan Durango Highway. Well preserved pine-oak forest with common bird inhabitants including the Tufted Jay, Red Warbler, Red-faced Warbler, Olivaceous Woodcreeper, Northern Goshawk, and many migratory warblers.
Want to participate?
We are looking for enthusiastic birdwatchers who would like to join us for our next Christmas bird count.
This winter was our 3rd bird count in Mazatlan and the 2nd at Tufted Jay Preserve along the famous Mazatlan - Durango
Highway, one of the most important birding corridors in the world.
