Mazatlan is framed by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range to the east the Pacific port city of Mazatlan lies at the gateway to the magnificent Sea of Cortez, one of the most beautiful and productive seas in the world. Also known as the Gulf of California, Jacques Cousteau dubbed it the aquarium of the world and UNESCO has recently declared its islands a World Heritage Site. The Tropic of Cancer crosses Mexico just north of Mazatlan.
