Megadiverse Mexico
In order to truly understand the importance of Mexico in terms of Biodiversity consider the following facts which make Mexico Mega Diverse:
The total number of countries in the World now stands at 170, out of which only 12 harbors between 60 and 70 % of the entire biodiversity of the planet. These twelve countries are considered mega diverse including Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia and Colombia.
Mexico is in first place in reptile diversity, second place in mammals, fourth in amphibians and vascular plants and tenth in birds. That’s right; Mexico has more than 1000 species of birds of a total of just over 10,000 for the entire World. More than 500 have been registered in the estate of Sinaloa (sign up for one of Sendero Mexico’s Birding Tours). Mexico is also is in first place in pine tree species (to witness this, sign up for our Tufted Jay Preserve Tour)
What all this ads up to is that more than 10% of the entire biodiversity on the planet live in Mexico. More than 65,000 species have been described in Mexico yet it is believed this number could exceed 100,000.
